July 7, 2025: It's official! Candidate Stephon Ferguson is an official candidate for the upcoming elections. He filed Monday morning for Fayetteville City Council District 1, the first day of filing in the county. Dr. Ferguson says he is looking forward to the campaign and the opportunity to serve the people of District 1 and the city of Fayetteville.

Ferguson decided to take on a challenge to read to every kindergarten student in the county to highlight the importance of literacy as the foundation for all education. He began October 2004 and completed the mission March 2005. On April 5th, 2005 the city of Fayetteville, Cumberland County, and all surrounding municipalities declared the day "Read to a Child Day" and encouraged its citizens to read to our children. The response and demand was so great, Ferguson continued the reading program for two more years. See Proclamations Below
On August 26, 2023 Dr. Stephon Ferguson was honored to receive from North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is among the most prestigious awards presented by the Governor of North Carolina. The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is presented to individuals who have a proven record of extraordinary service to the state. Contributions to their communities, extra effort in their careers, and many years of service to their organizations are some of the guidelines by which recipients are selected for this award.
